We are delighted to bring you the latest story in the Education Queensland International (EQI) Alumni series.

In this edition we follow the study experiences of Cheryl from Malaysia, an EQI alumna who is currently studying a Bachelor of Dental Science (Honours) at The University of Queensland (UQ).

Cheryl came to Queensland to study Years 11 and 12 at Kedron State High School (SHS). In 2015 she graduated with an Overall Position (OP) 11 and was presented with the Dux and Advancement of Understanding awards, the John Kieseker Memorial Prize for Mathematics and high achievement awards in chemistry, physics and graphics.

Cheryl’s fantastic results enabled her to choose from a number of offers from universities in Queensland and interstate. However, after a great deal of consideration, Cheryl followed her heart and her first preference to stay in Brisbane and study dentistry at UQ.

Now in her second year of university, Cheryl is well on the way to achieving her career ambitions and says she will always have positive memories of her time at Kedron SHS.

“Everyone, especially the staff members of the International and Language Departments, really made my experience at Kedron an enjoyable and memorable one,” Cheryl said.

“I hope that the school will continue to assist and inspire more students to achieve their dreams regardless of their ethnicity or background because one thing that Kedron really taught me for sure while I was there was that indeed, To Strive is to Shine.”

1 OPs are a rank order of Queensland high school students based on their relative achievement in Authority subjects. Each eligible student receives a single OP. OPs are reported in 25 bands, from 1 (first) to 25 (last). For more information visit the

Pathways to UQ

Study with EQI to get a head start in tertiary study

Studying in a Queensland Government high school may offer students the advantage of fast-tracked, experiential and even direct-entry pathways to Australian universities, TAFE and vocational education institutions. Students in Queensland high schools receive counselling and advice on career pathways, study options and senior subject choices to help them take the next step towards their career goal.

International students who progress from an Australian high school into English language tertiary study have the advantage of being better prepared for university, giving them more time to focus on study.

What are the advantages?

  • The opportunity to develop English language fluency at high school
  • Familiarity with Australian methods of teaching, learning and assessment
  • The support of established friendships in the local community
  • Existing accommodation arrangements
  • A practical understanding of living and studying in Australia
  • Experience of how things work, including currency, public transport, shopping and culture.
